A large walk-in campsite located along the East Branch of the Penobscot River with access to the river. Picnic tables are available for campers, as well as a fire ring and access to a vault toilet. This site makes for a magnificent place for night sky viewing.
The Upper East Branch Campsite is open year-round. Typically, it can be accessed by vehicle from late May-early November depending on road conditions. In the winter, campers must park at the north entrance and ski or snowshoe to the campsite.
Campsites are available for reservation on Recreation.gov between Memorial Day weekend and October 31. Unreserved sites are available for first-come, first-serve stays the day of arrival.
Make a Reservation →From late May to mid-November, Upper East Branch Campsite can be reached by vehicle from the north entrance. The campsite is located approximately 1.1 miles from the north gate.
The surface of the site is made of grass, dirt, and gravel with areas that may be uneven or muddy. There is a loose gravel path from the campsite that connects to an ADA vault toilet nearby for visitors to use.
Campfires can only be kindled with a valid Maine Forest Service campfire permit and only in designated locations such as established campsites and lean-to's. A free permit is easily acquired prior to a visit by calling the Northern Regional Office of the Maine Fire Service at 207-435-7963 or visiting them at 45 Radar Street in Ashland, Maine.

This is a walk-in campsite. Campers must walk approximately 100ft from the parking space to the campsite clearing. The surface of the site is made of grass, dirt, and gravel with areas that may be uneven or muddy. There is one ADA vault toilet nearby for visitors to use. The short path to the river is not ADA accessible.
